Safety & Operating Guidance

1. Welcome

Thank you for booking The Corner.

The Corner is a community-managed public space operated by Darvel & Area Regeneration Team (DART). It is designed for flexible use including:

  • Performances

  • Community events

  • Markets

  • Meetings

  • Outdoor gatherings

This guide explains how to use the space safely and responsibly.


2. The Space Layout

The Corner consists of:

Upper Level

  • Public gathering area

  • Seating benches

  • Flower beds

  • Access ramp

  • Stairs to lower level

Lower Level

  • Covered canopy area

  • Amphitheatre-style seating

  • Removable stage area

  • Flexible open space for tables, stalls or performances

Please ensure:

  • The accessible ramp remains clear at all times.

  • Stairs and walkways are never obstructed.

  • Emergency access routes remain unobstructed.


3. Capacity & Supervision

The Hirer is responsible for managing numbers safely.

  • Do not overcrowd the canopy or stage area.

  • Ensure children are supervised at all times.

  • Maintain safe movement between upper and lower levels.

  • Monitor behaviour around steps and raised areas.

If your event involves large numbers, you should conduct a basic risk assessment.


4. Health & Safety Responsibilities

As the Hirer, you are responsible for:

  • The safety of your attendees.

  • Equipment you bring on site.

  • Managing any event-specific risks.

  • Ensuring electrical equipment is safe and suitable for outdoor use.

  • Ensuring cables are covered or secured to prevent trip hazards.

If you notice a hazard, report it immediately to DART.


5. Stage & Equipment Use

If using the stage area:

  • Ensure it is stable before use.

  • Do not overload with heavy equipment.

  • Keep clear access routes around the stage.

  • Ensure performers are aware of edge drop points.

If using sound equipment:

  • Keep cables tidy and taped down if necessary.

  • Ensure equipment is weather-protected.

  • Keep volume at reasonable levels.


6. Weather Considerations

The Corner is partly outdoors.

The Hirer must consider:

  • Rain and slippery surfaces.

  • Wind affecting staging or temporary structures.

  • Heat and sun exposure.

  • Ice in colder months.

In severe weather, events may need to be modified or cancelled for safety.


7. Fire Safety

  • Do not use naked flames unless agreed in advance.

  • BBQs or gas appliances require prior written approval.

  • Keep flammable materials away from electrical equipment.

  • In an emergency, evacuate calmly to a safe area away from the structure.


8. Alcohol & Licensing

If alcohol is to be sold or supplied:

  • The Hirer must ensure appropriate licensing is in place.

  • The Hirer is responsible for managing behaviour safely.

DART may request evidence of compliance.


9. Cleanliness & Waste

The Hirer must:

  • Remove all waste at the end of the event.

  • Leave the area clean and tidy.

  • Dispose of rubbish responsibly.

  • Return furniture or equipment to agreed positions.

Failure to do so may result in deposit retention.


10. Damage & Reporting

Report immediately:

  • Damage

  • Injury

  • Near misses

  • Equipment faults

The Hirer may be liable for damage caused during the booking.


11. Accessibility

The Corner is designed to be accessible.

  • Keep the ramp clear.

  • Avoid blocking accessible seating areas.

  • Ensure clear pathways for mobility users.

Accessibility must not be compromised by event layouts.


12. Neighbour Consideration

The Corner is located within a residential community.

Please:

  • Keep noise to reasonable levels.

  • Avoid unnecessary late-night disturbance.

  • Finish at the agreed time.

Respect for neighbours ensures continued community use.


13. Incident Procedure

In the event of:

  • Serious injury → Call emergency services (999)

  • Safety concern → Contact DART representative

  • Structural concern → Stop activity immediately

Always prioritise safety.


14. Your Responsibility

By proceeding with your booking, you confirm that you:

  • Have read this Hub Usage Guide.

  • Understand your responsibilities.

  • Accept responsibility for your event and attendees.
